Houston History & What's Nearby

In 1836, Houston was founded by two New York entrepreneurs named John and Augustus Kirby. They named their settlement after Sam Houston, who was a hero of the Texas Revolution and an ideal candidate for President of the Republic of Texas. Houston served as the capital of Texas in the 1840s, though Austin ultimately won out. Railroad connections, the discovery of oil, and the expansion of the Houston Ship Channel helped boost Houston's population and economy during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Today, Houston is home to more than 2.1 million people, making it the fourth-largest city in the U.S. after New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Houston is well known as the home of NASA's Johnson Space Center, from which numerous space missions have been overseen. The Port of Houston is the second busiest port in the U.S. in terms of total cargo tonnage.
